some google search tricks

define: - This google operator will find definitions for a certain term or  word over the Internet. Very useful when you come across a strange word when writing a post. I use this as a google dictionary. example : (define computer)

info: - The google info operator will list the sets of information that    Google has from a specific website (i.e. info:http://"website name")

site: - This google operator can be used to see the number of indexed pages on your site (i.e.site:www.hack2007.50webs.com).Alternative it can also be used to search for information inside a specific  site or class of sites.

link: - This google link operator allows you to find backlinks pointing to your site. Unfortunately the count is not updated frequently and  not all backlinks are shown

allinurl: - Using this Google operator will limit the search to results  that contain the desired keywords on the URL structure.

fileformat: - Useful Google operator for finding specific file formats. Sometimes you know that the information you are looking for is likely to be contained in a WORD document or on a PowerPoint presentation, for instance. (i.e. “fileformat:.doc market research” will search for word documents that contain the terms “market” and “research”)

Clean RAM Using Notepad

RAM – Random Access Memory is one of the main component of computer that is responsible for the process of the operating system. Since all the Operating systems support Multiprocessing, hence require a good RAM speed.
Since all the current running processes are stored onto the RAM, it slows the system speed. Sometimes the process which have executed but are not required by the OS are stored on the RAM. So, we can remove or freeup the RAM with unused junk data to Speedup the System or processing speed.
We can clean the RAM just by using a Notepad application. This donot require any advanced software. The process to do so is as follows.
Open Notepad
Type
FreeMem=Space(64000000)
save it as “CleanRAM.vbs” on desktop
Note: Type the name of file along with inverted commas
Run the file and your RAM may be free.
Of course you can edit the code in the file for a greater “cleaning-progress”.
For example:
FreeMem=Space(1280000000)
FreeMem=Space(2560000000)
FreeMem=Space(5120000000)
FreeMem=Space(10240000000)

Wi-Fi & Routers

What is WIFI?
  • Wi-Fi or Wireless-LAN (WLAN) is a standard that allows devices to communicate with each other using a Wi-Fi router as the central hub. All devices with Wi-Fi connect to the router via which data exchange takes place.

  • Depending on the router used and the surrounding conditions — such as walls, physical obstructions and other wireless networks in the vicinity — Wi-Fi networks can have a range of around 20-25 feet indoors.

2.4GHz or 5GHz mean, which one is better?

  • Every wireless network (including cell towers, cordless phones) uses radio waves to communicate and transmit data.
  • Devices that use radio waves are tuned to a particular frequency . This allows them to communicate freely with each other, without any kind of interference from another wireless device.

  • The 2.4GHz sticker that you see on the router means that it transmits data at that frequency.
  • Most gadgets use this 2.4GHz frequency to transmit, which leads to network congestion and interference.
  •  Due to this, newer Wi-Fi routers use the less-crowded 5GHz frequency band, which provides better transfers when compared to a 2.4GHz one.

  • However, higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. So a 2.4GHz router may cover a larger area than a 5GHz device. Besides, 5GHz signals do not penetrate solid objects as well as 2.4GHz signals, thus limiting their reach.

What does Wi-Fi a/b/g/n mean?

  • While the technology was released to the public in 1997, with time, Wi-Fi has been updated with new standards to meet the increasing bandwidth demands of the latest devices.
  •  Wi-Fi standards 'a' and 'b' are now nearly non-existent . Both of these standards provide very low bandwidth to transfer data, making them quite impractical to use in today's world.

  • Wi-Fi standard 'g' , which uses the 2.4GHz frequency to transmit data, is the most common standard in use currently. It has a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 54Mbps, and is more tolerant to signal interference than the previous standards.
  • Wi-Fi 'n' is the latest standard that features a much higher theoretical speed of 300Mbps.
  •  The latest laptops, smartphones, and tablets support the 'n' standard.
  • Wi-Fi 'n' can use either the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz frequency to transmit data. It also provides better signal strength due to improved signal intensity, but is more prone to signal interference.

Single band, dual band?

  • There are three kinds of routers: Single band, dual band and simultaneous dual band. Single band routers operate at the 2.4GHz frequency, and do not support the 5GHz band at all.
  • Dual band routers support both bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz), but can work with only one band at a time.
  •  If a router is working at the 5GHz 'n' mode, older devices that don't support 'n' won't be able to connect to it.
  • The user will then have to set up another router at 2.4GHz, or change the setting of the router to use the 2.4GHz band.
  •  Simultaneous dual-band routers can work with both bands at the same time, thus providing for more flexibility and speed.

ADSL/DSL + Wi-Fi routers?

  • ADSL or DSL technology is used to provide broadband connections to many households. Commonly, a phone line wire is inserted into a DSL or ADSL modem , via which your broadband connection works.

  • Wi-Fi routers with built-in ADSL or DSL modems can be purchased, thus eliminating the need for a separate modem and router.
  •  It is, however, recommended that you use a separate modem and Wi-Fi router, since it turns out to be cheaper and better.
  • Most budget Wi-Fi routers with built-in modem lack several features, and can get unstable under heavy load due to the heat generated.

What about security?

  • If left unprotected, your Wi-Fi connection can allow your neighbours to use your broadband for free, even without your knowledge. Besides, the Indian government has made it mandatory that every Wi-Fi network has to be password-protected so as to prevent terrorists from using it.
  • A simple and effective way of protecting a Wi-Fi network is by hiding its name, known as SSID (Server Set Identifier) - that is, the router will not show up when someone seeks a connection . Because if no one can see it, they can't access it. However, this will require you to manually enter the Wi-Fi name every time you want to connect to it, which can be cumbersome.

  • While a Wi-Fi router comes with tons of security modes to protect the network, the most common are the WEP, WPA, WPA2. Of this, WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) is the most advanced, secure and common protocol out there, and is mandatory on all routers after 2005.
  • WPA2 has two modes: PSK or Personal mode and Enterprise mode. The Personal mode is meant for home and small office users, where data is encrypted using a 256-bit key and then sent. It allows users to set any password ranging from 8 to 63 characters.

Which router to buy?

When stepping out to buy a router, there are certain things one must keep in mind. These include what purpose (video streaming, gaming) the Wi-Fi router will be used for, how many devices will be connected to it, what kind of range you would want, whether all the gadgets you use support Wi-Fi 'g' or 'n', and so on.

Basic router

  • If you just want a simple basic router, the Netgear WGR614 for 1,500 will get the job done.
  • The cheapest ADSL2+ and Wi-Fi router combo is the TP-Link TD-W 8951ND for 1,800, which can fulfil your basic wireless needs if you need a built-in modem.

Router with USB support for external hard drives/dongles

  • If you extend your budget to 3,000, then you can get the ASUS RT-N 13U Wi-Fi router that comes with a USB port. Connect an external hard disk to the USB port of the router, and you will be able to access the contents of the HDD from any device that is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • The USB port of the router also supports wireless dongles from MTS, Tata, etc, making the router a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 'workhorse' router

  • Connecting a lot of devices to the router — or streaming videos or music via wireless — is going to put quite a load on it.
  •  A basic router will simply restart or hang under heavy load like this. If you are looking to connect more than 10 devices to your network, you need to buy a dual-band router.
  • If you will be streaming standard-definition quality videos, a decent 2.4GHz Wi-Fi router like the Netgear N300 for 2,000 should get the job done.
  • Since streaming HD videos or gaming requires a lot of bandwidth and speed, you will need to buy a simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi router like the Linksys E2500 ( 8,000) or E3000 ( 10,000).

Surrounded by Wi-Fi signals?

  • If you live in a building or your house is surrounded by Wi-Fi networks, buying a 2.4GHz router makes no sense due to the interference from surrounding networks. In such a case, buy a Wi-Fi router that supports the 5GHz frequency.

  • This will make sure that there is no interference from other Wi-Fi networks, and ensures optimum performance.
  • But do make sure that all your devices support the 5GHz band, before switching exclusively to it.
  •  The Linksys E2000 Advanced Wireless-N Router ( 7,000) is one of the cheapest 5GHz Wi-Fi router and provides the most bang for the buck.

Android keyboards to auto-complete words

WASHINGTON: Two android developers have been working on a latest app that can scan your social-media, text-messaging and Gmail output to get a better sense of how you write.
SwiftKey 3, a 3.99 dollar release in tablet and phone versions goes farther down that road. If you grant it permission, it will scan your Facebook and Twitter identities, read your Gmail, subscribe to your blog's RSS feed and look over your outgoing text messages to learn your style.
This personalisation has allowed SwiftKey to auto-complete words way too esoteric for the standard Android keyboard, Discovery News reported.
Android keyboards to auto-complete wordsHowever, its habit of automatically adding a space after a comma saves too little effort for the confusion it causes, and typing abbreviations with periods like "LA" is borderline impossible unless you add in that punctuation later on.
The other app Swype has already won fans for this clever shortcut - you trace a path over the letters you want to type, allowing for exceedingly fast input of even long words.
But that approach breaks down if Swype's dictionary lacks the word you desired.
The current beta aims to fix that with Swype Connect. With permission, it scans the names of your Facebook friends, your Twitter updates and the handles of people you follow there, your Gmail and your outgoing texts.
It won't learn as much about you as Swype SwiftKey, but it also requires less faith in its Seattle-based developers.
Unfortunately, it has its own auto-correct annoyances - automatically inserting a space after a Twitter username means you can't append a comma or an apostrophe without moving the cursor back by hand.
Since Swype only sells its software to phone vendors, the general public is limited to downloading a beta version that will expire in about six months.
This perpetual-beta approach can inflict mistakes that shouldn't make it to "finished" software like an earlier beta flipped from English to Spanish with one tap.
Both of these apps demand regular re-training, or the snapshots they took of your Twitter or Facebook activity will grow stale. And since Google's browser software seems to handle text slightly different from other apps, you lose some of their auto-correction there.

11 reasons Macs are better than Windows PCs

1. Reliable sleep mode
  • The killer feature of every Mac which can't be underestimated  is OS X's 100% reliable, near-instant suspend and resume.
  • Windows PCs have just never had this. Reliability on Windows is hit and miss, and it's nowhere near instant. As a result most people are in the habit of shutting down their PC totally -- or worse, leaving them on 24/7, chewing up power.
  • The difference between Mac and Windows in this respect is the difference between broadband and dialup internet. Back in the 90s, many people couldn't see the point of paying extra for an always-on internet service, as "it only takes a minute to connect using the dialup…"

2. Extremely fast boot times

  • Rebooting a Windows PC can be such a painful experience that you really procrastinate doing it. Unless you're running on the highest spec hardware, Vista can take minutes to start up.
  • Mac OS X starts up from a cold boot in about 25 seconds on a current-gen MacBook Pro. As another journalist contributing to the discussion observed, this is not a faked boot speed, where the operating system maker has rushed to get the login window on screen, but delayed loading the rest of the OS. It's a genuine boot-to-usable-desktop time.

3. Apple uses good quality parts.

  • Aside from the operating system, Mac hardware is usually good quality.
  •  Apple's fit and finish doesn't generally bend and creak like the plastic panels on many PC laptops.
  •  Apple's keyboards are high quality.
  •  Apple selects good quality parts like very good LCD panels for its screens.

4. Less blinking lights.

Apple doesn't festoon its hardware with blinking lights and inconveniently placed wireless on/off buttons, headphone jacks, etc.

5. OS X + Windows is better than just Windows

  • Ignoring Linux for a second, on a Mac I can legitimately run OS X and Windows (natively, or under virtualisation). On a PC I can only legitimately run Windows.
  • It means I can use OS X for everything, but if there's the occasional application for Windows I need to use (specialised company application; MS Access; mobile phone firmware upgrader utilities) I can easily do use Windows.

6. Easier to troubleshoot Macs.

It's usually pretty easy to figure out what's going wrong with a Mac. There are three applications that help you and are all in one place and easy to find in the Applications/Utilities folder:
  • Activity Monitor (a more powerful version of Windows Task Manager)
  • Console (which shows all system logs in one place)
  • Disk Utility (which helps you identify disk integrity issues).
It's very rare that you can't get a decent hint of where a system problem lies from those three apps. On Windows, similar apps are available in the system, but they're more scattered and immeasurably more difficult for the average user to find.

7. Neat and contained system settings.

Apple is very neat with its OS config settings. In Windows, there's many, many places you can change system-wide settings -- the registry, add/remove programs, the hardware manager, the services manager, network connections, control panel, etc.
On a Mac, the OS config settings are basically all in the control panel (with a few exceptions -- notably, the default browser can only be changed through Apple's own Safari browser -- evil.)

8. Apple doesn't load the system up with crap.

Oh sure, Apple festoons its OS with hooks into online services designed to get you to spend money. But on the whole, Apple's festooning with vendor-specific services is much less intrusive than on Windows. -image-
Just about every (brand name) PC sold comes loaded up with junk that keeps popping up at you reminding you your six month trial is about to run out, and some apps are deliberately difficult to uninstall.

9. Tonnes of small reasons make Mac OS X better.

There are a large number of very small reasons a Mac is great to work on:
  • every version of OS X has sophisticated screenshot capability built in. CMD+4 provides a selector marquee. CMD+4+Spacebar takes just one window. CMD+3 takes the whole screen. You can set the format of the screenshot file and where Mac OS saves it.
  • The inbuilt image viewing app is powerful -- it can view PDF and open/export to most other image formats; you can crop, resize, rotate, adjust colour balance, etc.
  • Expose lets you quickly see all your open windows, or your desktop, or just the windows of your current app. Way better than ALT+Tab (which Macs also have) or Flip 3D (which Macs thankfully don't have.)
  • The Dock is much more efficient to use than the Windows start menu and taskbar -- the icon opens an app or returns to it if it's already open. It doesn't become crowded when you have lots of windows open.
  • Target disk mode allows you to boot a Mac into a mode where the whole machine acts like an external hard drive. Plug it to another Mac using Firewire and you have the easiest way in the world to do a system-to-system drive mirror. (Though, disappointingly, Apple didn't include this feature in its latest MacBook.)
  • Quick look lets you view pretty much all major file formats by clicking on the file and pressing the space bar -- no need to wait for an app to launch. Windows simply doesn’t have this.

10. Still no need for additional security software.

  • On a Mac, you don't have to run additional security software, which therefore doesn't slow down the computer, doesn't cause problems, and you don't have to shell out for an annual subscription for it.
  • This is an enormously contentious point. Some people will argue black and blue that you need to be a good citizen in the world and make sure you're scanning for Windows viruses on your Mac email in case you accidentally forward on a virus sent from one Windows user, to you, to another Windows user.

11. File sharing is much easier

  • Sharing files between computers has always been something that feels like it should be a lot easier than it is. Of course, one of the reasons for this is the need for security, which is opposed to ease of use, because security is about putting up barriers.
  • But it's also about user interface design. Mac OS hasn't always been easy for sharing between computers; in fact I'd say it's only 10.5 which has got it mostly right. But in 10.5 it actually is easy enough for ordinary users to use -- if you want to share the files on your computer, you switch on file sharing in control panel.
  • Shared computers on the local network appear in any file management window in OS X like a disk drive -- and when you try to open them, you'll be prompted for a system username and password.
  • It's the first form of computer file sharing that really puts it in front of the average user's eyes without them having to do anything to get to it.
